Edit Doron. 2003. Bare Singular Reference To Kinds. Proceedings From Semantics And Linguistic Theory, 13, Pp. 73–90. . Publisher's Version תקציר
Gennaro Chierchia's (1998) neo-Carlsonian account of reference to kinds via nominalization type-shift from properties to kinds, which applies to mass & plural properties exclusively, is upheld despite evidence of bare singular reference to kinds in Hebrew & Brazilian Portuguese, both of which have definite articles & plural inflection of nouns. Languages that admit bare singular nouns in addition to nouns with definite determiners are shown to use incorporation to obtain existential interpretations of bare nouns; reference to kinds requires a noun to be either plural or the subject of a categorical judgment, in which case it is interpreted as definite. Whereas definiteness requires morphological marking in Hungarian & Arabic, which allow bare singulars as indefinites, morphological definiteness marking is not required for subjects of categorical judgments in Hebrew & Brazilian Portuguese; bare singulars referring to kinds are also held to have definite interpretations in Hindi & Russian, which lack morphological definiteness marking. Gradual bargaining is represented by an agenda: a family of increasing sets of joint utilities, parameterized by time. A solution for gradual bargaining specifies an agreement at each time. We axiomatize an ordinal solution, i.e., one that is covariant with order-preserving transformations of utility. It can be viewed as the limit of a step-by-step bargaining in which the agreement of the last negotiation becomes the disagreement point for the next. The stepwise agreements may follow the Nash solution, the Kalai-Smorodinsky solution or many others.

This essay has two main arguments, the first of which proposes a model for understanding narrative beginnings that focuses on both their textual dynamics (designated by the concepts of exposition and launch) and their corresponding readerly dynamics (designated by the concepts of introduction and entrance) and then uses that model to analyze Austen’s atypical beginning and its consequences in Persuasion. The novel’s exposition and launch do not invite the audience to feel that they have entered a comic world, one in which the protagonist’s eventual happiness is assured. Instead, Austen delays these assurances until the setting of the novel shifts to Lyme. As a result, Austen interjects into her comedy some striking new elements: unmerited suffering by the protagonist without any promise that it is only temporary; an awareness that the happy outcome could have been achieved by way of a much less painful route; and a corresponding awareness that, despite the happy outcome, the painful past has permanent effects. The second argument contrasts this view of Persuasion’s form and ideology with the account of both offered by Mary Poovey. Where Poovey sees the form papering over tensions in the ideology of romantic love, this essay sees the novel’s attitude toward love as more realistic than romantic. Furthermore, the analysis suggests that, in the effort to connect form and ideology, critics are likely to be better served by starting with form and then working out toward ideology rather than starting with ideology and working back toward form.

May 2019 update: James Phelan is Distinguished University Professor at Ohio State University. His research has been devoted to developing a viable account of narrative as rhetoric. Muhammad M Haj-Yahia. 2003. Beliefs About Wife Beating Among Arab Men From Israel: The Influence Of Their Patriarchal Ideology. Journal Of Family Violence, 18, Pp. 193–206. doi:10.1023/A:1024012229984. תקציר
Despite the recent increase in public and professional interest in the problem of wife beating in Arab society, in Israel, and in the rest of the Arab world, there is a serious lack of empirical research on different dimensions of the problem in those societies. This paper presents the results of a survey conducted among a systematic random sample of 362 Arab husbands from Israel, in an attempt to examine the contribution of patriarchal ideology toward explaining their beliefs about wife beating. Although about 58% of the participants indicated that there is no excuse for a man to beat his wife, 15-62% still justified wife beating on certain occasions (e.g., adultery, failure to obey husbands, disrespect for parents and relatives). In addition, although the participants tended to perceive abusive and violent husbands as responsible for their behavior, 52% still expressed understanding of that behavior and, on some occasions, 23-43% even blamed the wife for violence against her. Regression and multiple regression analyses revealed that over and above the participants' age and level of education, their masculine sex-role stereotypes, negative and traditional attitudes toward women, nonegalitarian marital role expectations, and familial patriarchal beliefs were the most significant predictors of beliefs about wife beating. Implications of the results and limitations of the study are also discussed.

BACKGROUND: Carotenoids contribute to the beneficial effects of fruits and vegetables consumption; however, the bioavailability of these compounds from fresh or processed foods is not well established. AIM OF THE STUDY: We evaluated the bioavailability of beta-carotene (15 mg) from a single meal composed of cooked, pureed carrots and compared it to raw, chopped carrots. METHODS: Test meals were given to overnight-fastedileostomy volunteers (n = 8) along with skimmed-milk yogurt containing 40 g of added sunflower oil. Blood and complete ileal effluent samples were collected over a 24 h period. Samples were solvent-extracted and the beta-carotene content measured by HPLC. RESULTS: Kinetics of excretion of cis and trans beta-carotene were similar. More beta-carotene was absorbed from puree as compared to raw carrots. Carotenoid mass-balance calculations indicated that 65.1 +/- 7.4% of the beta-carotene was absorbed from cooked pureed carrot meals, vs. 41.4 +/- 7.4 % from raw, chopped carrot meals. Gastrointestinal transit parameters did not differ significantly among the volunteers. As expected, the calculated lag phase was five times longer for raw vs. cooked carrots. Mean t-end, t-1/2 and rate of mass transit resulted in similar values for both raw and cooked carrot meals. A moderate response in carotenoid plasma profile was observed for cooked carrot test meals. CONCLUSIONS: Significantly more beta-carotene was absorbed from meals containing cooked, pureed carrots than from meals containing the raw vegetable. Moderate carotenoid plasma response was detected within 6 h following the administration of cooked processed carotenoid-containing single meal.

The Escherichia coli BglF protein is a sugar-sensor that controls the activity of the transcriptional antiterminator BglG by reversibly phosphorylating it, depending on beta-glucoside availability. BglF is a membrane-bound protein, whereas BglG is a soluble protein, and they are both present in the cell in minute amounts. How do BglF and BglG find each other to initiate signal transduction efficiently? Using bacterial two-hybrid systems and the Far-Western technique, we demonstrated unequivocally that BglG binds to BglF and to its active site-containing domain in vivo and in vitro. Measurements by surface plasmon resonance corroborated that the affinity between these proteins is high enough to enable their stable binding. To visualize the subcellular localization of BglG, we used fluorescence microscopy. In cells lacking BglF, the BglG-GFP fusion protein was evenly distributed throughout the cytoplasm. In contrast, in cells producing BglF, BglG-GFP was localized to the membrane. On addition of beta-glucoside, BglG-GFP was released from the membrane, becoming evenly distributed throughout the cell. Using mutant proteins and genetic backgrounds that impede phosphorylation of the Bgl proteins, we demonstrated that BglG-BglF binding and recruitment of BglG to the membrane sensor requires phosphorylation but does not depend on the individual phosphorylation sites of the Bgl proteins. We suggest a mechanism for rapid response to environmental changes by preassembly of signaling complexes, which contain transcription regulators recruited by their cognate sensors-kinases, under nonstimulating conditions, and release of the regulators to the cytoplasm on stimulation. This mechanism might be applicable to signaling cascades in prokaryotes and eukaryotes.

A polymer stereocomplex is defined as a stereoselective interaction between two complementing stereoregular polymers, that interlock and form a new composite, demonstrating altered physical properties in comparison to the parent polymers. The main interactions, resulting in the complexation, are suggested to rely on stereoselective van der Waals forces. This review focuses mainly on homo-stereocomplexes of poly(methyl methacrylate) homo- and block-copolymers, which are non-degradable biopolymers, and biodegradable poly(lactic acid) (PLA) homo- and block-copolymers and hetero-stereocomplexes between D-configured PLA and L-configured peptides. Topics including physical methods for characterization and visualization and the use as matrices for controlled release, tissue engineering or other biomedical purposes, are discussed for the different stereocomplexes.
When individuals choose from whatever alternatives available to them the one that maximizes their utility then it is always desirable that the government provide them with as many alternatives as possible. Individuals, however, do not always choose what is best for them and their mistakes may be exacerbated by the availability of options. We analyze self-selection models, when individuals know more about themselves than it is possible for governments to know, and show that it may be socially optimal to limit and sometimes to eliminate individual choice. As an example, we apply Luce s (1959) model of random choice to a work-retirement decision model and show that the optimal provision of choice is positively related to the degree of heterogeneity in the population and that even with very small degrees of non-rationality it may be optimal not to provide individuals any choice.
